The South African Longline fishing vessel Sudur Havid sank in South Georgia waters on 6 June 1998 in position 53° 55′ S 041° 24′ W.
21 of the crew survived, including the British Fisheries Observer, but sadly 17 died. The story of the sinking is tld on the book ‘Las tMan Off’ by the observer Matt Lewis.
There are two memorials to the 17 victims. This one is in the Grytviken church. The other is a cross on the hillside above the cemetery.
