The inquest in the magistrate's records at SPRI tell us that Firing was the chief engineer on 'Southern Lily' but was living on 'Southern Lotus' prior to spending the winter ashore at Leith. The two were tied alongside at Leith along with 'Southern Larkspur', another catcher. He disappeared during the night of 15/16 March after socialising and was last seen on 'Southern Larkspur'. It is assumed that he fell overboard while crossing between the vessels and his body was never recovered.
