Carty died at sea on SS 'Ravenstone'. He collapsed at the wheel and died six hours later in position 45° 15'S 034° 37W while ship was on its way south from Glasgow. It arrived in South Georgia on 21 December.
There are no burial records or register of death entry so he was probably buried at sea.
