Mark was stationed at King Edward Point in 1994/1995 as the Royal Marine Mountain Leader. Whilst there he joined a visiting expedition and climbed to the top of Mt Paget, the island's highest peak, in January 1995 - only the fourth ascent.

He died in Iraq on active service in Iraq in 2004.

His widow Lisa brought the plaque when she visited on the yacht Pelagic Australis in 2004.
