Dyre was the Surgeon of the ship Esther and died during a typhus outbreak. Four of the nine unmarked graves in the cemetery are reported to be from the same ship.
The original grave marker was removed indoors to the Museum at Grytviken and replaced in 2000 by a replica made by Curator Tim Carr.
